Karoo back roads and night skies
“Nothing happens in the Karoo. That’s the point.”
Grew up on a sheep farm outside Prince Albert. Drives the N1 the way other people read novels.

The story

I was born on a farm between Prince Albert and the Swartberg and left for Cape Town at eighteen, like everyone does. I came back at thirty-two. For a few years I worked on the farm, then I started driving friends out to the places I had missed — the padstal with the good bread, the pass at the right hour, the farmer who still shears by hand. At some point the friends became travellers and I started writing it down. The Long Way to the Karoo is that notebook, tidied up. It is slow because the Karoo is slow. I do not promise sightings or sunsets. I promise the right road at the right time of day.
How they travel
I plan every day around the light and the people we will meet, not around the kilometres. We stop often. If a farmer invites us in for coffee, the schedule waits.
